Sea, Road or Air? How to Choose the Right Freight Mode for Your Shipment
Cost, speed, cargo type and route all shape the decision. A practical comparison of sea, road and air freight for shipments to and from Azerbaijan.
The foundation of international freight forwarding is choosing the right mode of transport. What you ship, where it is going and how quickly it must arrive all point towards one mode — and sometimes a combination.
Sea freight
Sea freight is the most economical way to move large volumes and heavy goods. It is also efficient in fuel per tonne-kilometre. The trade-off is transit time and dependence on port schedules.
Best for: heavy, bulky or high-volume cargo; non-urgent shipments; containers and vehicles.
Road freight
Road transport offers flexibility and door-to-door delivery. It connects ports, factories and warehouses and crosses land borders directly.
Best for: regional trade, cross-border deliveries, part loads and the first and last mile of multimodal routes.
Air freight
Air freight is the fastest option for international shipments, with reliable schedules and short transit times. It costs more per kilogram, so it suits high-value or time-critical cargo.
Best for: electronics, pharmaceuticals, spare parts needed urgently, perishable or special cargo.
Questions to ask before you book
- How urgent is the delivery, and what does a delay cost?
- What is the weight and volume — and which is the chargeable weight?
- Does the cargo need temperature control or special handling?
- Which Incoterm applies, and who pays which leg?
Combining modes
Many shipments use more than one mode: sea plus road, or air plus road for final delivery. A forwarder plans the whole chain so handovers are smooth.
