IMPA Codes Explained: Why They Matter When You Order Marine Stores

The IMPA code is a six-digit number that identifies marine stores worldwide. Using it on your requisitions means faster quotes and the right item on delivery day.

If you have ever ordered “a valve” or “a rope” for a vessel, you know how many variations exist. The maritime industry solved this problem with a shared catalogue: the IMPA Marine Stores Guide, published by the International Marine Purchasing Association.

What is an IMPA code?

An IMPA code is a six-digit number assigned to a specific marine store item — for example a type of rope, a pipe fitting, a cleaning product or a galley utensil. The code describes the item precisely, including its size and specification, so buyer and supplier speak the same language.

Why use IMPA codes on requisitions?

  • Accuracy — the code removes ambiguity about size, material and type.
  • Speed — chandlers can quote and source faster when items are coded.
  • Comparability — the same code can be priced by different suppliers in different ports.
  • Fewer returns — the right item arrives the first time.

IMPA and ISSA

Alongside IMPA, many suppliers also work with the ISSA Ship Stores Catalogue of the International Ship Suppliers & Services Association. Both catalogues aim at the same goal: standardised, reliable ship supply.

Tips for better requisitions

  • Always include the IMPA code when it is known, plus a short description.
  • State the unit clearly — piece, set, metre, kilogram or carton.
  • For spare parts, add the maker, model and part number from the equipment manual.
  • Mention whether a substitute brand is acceptable.
